Its current form is indebted to the architectural vision of Ugolino Trinci, who restructured existing medieval buildings on the site between 1389 and 1407, completing his work by 1411. Numerous cycles of frescoes by several artists were added in the first decades of the 15<sup>th</sup> century. Exploring both sacred and secular themes, these artworks functioned as advertisements of the wealth and erudition of the Palazzo’s proprietors. After the fall of the Trinci family, the Palazzo became the seat of the city’s papal government in 1441. In the centuries to follow it suffered phases of disrepair and restoration, serving a motley assortment of purposes ranging from prison to theater.
