The flagstone of the cathedral was laid down on 13 November 1290 by Poppe Nicholas IV. The construction lasted almost three centuries with the design and style evolving from Romanesque to Gothic. The cathedral consists of a nave with six bays and two aisles, and it cruciform in shape. The chapel of the Madonna di San Brizio, also known as Cappella Nuova and Signorelli chapel, is a 15th century addition. Fra Angelico and Benozzo Gozzoli began the decoration of the chapel vault in 1447 but it was Luca Signorelli that would finish it after award the commission in 1499. He also painted the frescoes in the lunettes of the walls of the chapel between 1500 and 1503.
