The church’s appearance today is largely a product of the 17<sup>th</sup> century, when renovations were commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese and completed by Flaminio Ponzio and Giovanni Vasanzio. Later additions include the Albani Chapel of 1716 commissioned by Pope Clement XI. The Christian catacombs beneath San Sebastiano antedate the church itself and are alleged to have briefly contained the remains of Saints Paul and Peter. The catacombs include mausolea with mural paintings dating to the latter half of the 2<sup>nd</sup> century AD, stucco decoration, funerary inscriptions, early Christian iconography, and graffiti.<br /><br /><br /><u>Furt</u><u>her reading:</u><br />\nWikipedia contributors.
