Excavations were begun in the 1930s. Besides identifying successive habitation periods, important aspects of Ghassulian Chalcolithic culture were uncovered in the form of mural paintings. The paintings were executed on plaster in the walls of houses dated to the late Chalcolithic period. Due to their poor preservation, the murals remain enigmatic.
