Human settlement at Sirmium is attested by archeological evidence from around 5000 BC. Host from the 4th century BC to a population of Illyrians and Celts, Sirmium fell under Roman control in the 1st century BC and came to become the capital of the Pannonia Inferior province. Its political ascendency endured until at least the 4th century AD, witnessed not only by its political designation but also by its large population. Its ultimate destruction came at the hands of the Avars in the late 6th century. Remains of Sirmium’s Roman period include eight early Christian churches, numerous coins and ceramics, and a still-unexcavated hippodrome.
