Host from the 4<sup>th</sup> century BC to a population of Illyrians and Celts, Sirmium fell under Roman control in the 1<sup>st</sup> century BC and came to become the capital of the Pannonia Inferior province. Its political ascendency endured until at least the 4<sup>th</sup> century AD, witnessed not only by its political designation but also by its large population. Its ultimate destruction came at the hands of the Avars in the late 6<sup>th</sup> century.
