It rose to prominence among pious Catholics when it was rebuilt as a home for a relic of the Holy Cross, brought to the Abbey by Plantagenet Queen Isabella of Angoulême around the year 1233. The Gothic church of Holy Cross abbey is cruciform with a belfry, ribbed stone vaulted ceilings, and a mural painting depicting a hunting scene (likely completed in the 15<sup>th</sup> century). The abbey fell into grave disrepair in the 17<sup>th</sup> century following the Cromwellian war.
