The plan of the church, which was constructed in the late 9th century, is cross-in-square. It is decorated with a mural program roughly coeval with the creation of the church, and it is from a depiction of serpents in an image of hell on the narthex that the site takes its name. The subjects of the mural cycle include uncommon figures, such as the Rabbi Gamaliel, alongside more conventional themes including the Last Judgement and the Ascension. The church also includes a small burial room, with a frescoed arcosolium. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0cm; margin:0cm 0cm 6pt; text-align:justify\">&nbsp;</p>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0cm; margin:0cm 0cm 6pt; text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"tab-stops:194.15pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><u><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size:9.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Calibri Light&quot;,sans-serif\">Sources:</span></span></span></u></span></span></span></span></p>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0cm; margin:0cm 0cm 6pt; text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"tab-stops:194.15pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ihlara_valley\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\"><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Calibri Light&quot;,sans-serif\">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ihlara_valley</span></span></span></a></span></span></span></span></p>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0cm; margin:0cm 0cm 6pt; text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"tab-stops:194.15pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><a href=\"https://www.cappadociahistory.com/post/snake-church-ihlara\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\"><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Calibri Light&quot;,sans-serif\">https://www.cappadociahistory.com/post/snake-church-ihlara</span></span></span></a></span></span></span></span></p>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0cm; margin:0cm 0cm 6pt; text-align:justify\">&nbsp;</p>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0cm; margin:0cm 0cm 6pt; text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"tab-stops:194.15pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><u><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size:10.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Calibri Light&quot;,sans-serif\">Further reading: </span></span></span></u></span></span></span></span></p>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0cm; margin:0cm 0cm 6pt; text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"tab-stops:194.15pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size:10.0pt\"><span style=\"background:white\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Calibri Light&quot;,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#222222\">Inomata, K., &amp; Kijima, M.
