Located in Weltenburg, Germany, the abbey was founded at the initiative of Agilus and Eustice of Luxeuil in 617, and may represent the oldest establishment of its kind in Bavaria. It adopted Benedictine rule in the 8th century, and in the 10th century fell under the control of the Bishop of Regensburg. Major architectural revisions and additions include the consecration of a single nave church with a crypt in 1191, and significant renovations between 1441 and 1450. The abbey had to await the 18th century, however, before its next intensive alterations. Starting in 1713, Maurus Bächl took over the monastery’s leadership and implemented a Baroque architectural program, with a new abbey church in this up-to-date style. The 19th-century secularization of Bavaria brought about the abbey’s dissolution, and it was repurposed for new uses, including beer brewing. The abbey was later reconsecrated and restored during the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
