The city of Landshut, located in Eastern Bavaria, was founded in 1204 by Duke Louis I. Soon after its foundation, it became the capital of Lower Bavaria. Its name is derived from two Bavarian roots: Land (state) and Hut (protector). The favor it found among the Bavarian elites is evidenced by its hosting of the elaborate marriage of Princess Jadwiga Jagiellon in 1475 (the “Landshuter Hochzeit”), and its choice for the site of Louis X’s residence in the early 16th century. This home, completed in 1543, was modeled after the Renaissance palaces its owner had seen on his travels in Italy. Among Landshut’s important cultural monuments are the Gothic Trausnitz Castle, the Church of St. Martin, and the Seligenthal convent, which dates to the medieval period but was refurbished in a Baroque style.
