Cripta di San Leonardo

Historical note about the site/monument

The rock-cut church of San Leonardo and its crypt reflect the Greek Orthodox traditions connected with the Byzantine empire. The church still houses the remains of its original Greek altar as well as frescoes dating to the end of the 13th and beginning of the 14th centuries. The crypt, whose walls are decorated with pre-Angevin Byzantine painting, is divided planimetrically into three areas.
