Historical note about the site/monument

The Church of San Pietro in Montorio is situated high above Rome on the Janiculum hill. The extant construction was completed under the patronage of King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile, and stands on the grounds of an earlier 9th century church. It was consecrated in 1500. During the 16th and 17th centuries, several leading artists participated in the decoration of the church. Among the masters adding frescos to the church are Niccolò Circignani, Giorgio Vasari, and Giulio Mazzoni. Until the late 18th century, the church also housed Raphael’s Transfiguration. In addition to numerous important paintings, the church is home to Bramante’s Tempietto.
