Bongjeongsa temple
Historical note about the site/monument
- The Buddhist temple of Bongjeongsa was probably established in the late 7th century. It was reconstructed several times, most recently in the 14th century, and underwent restorations in the 17th and 20th centuries. It is of critical importance to the architectural history of Korea; the Nirvana Hall (Geukrakjeon) at Bongjeongsa is the oldest extant wooden building in the country. Also notable is the main hall of the temple (Daeungjeon), which presents unusual pillars and extensive mural painting.
