Holy Cross Abbey
Historical note about the site/monument
- The Holy Cross Abbey is a Cistercian complex founded in around 1180. It rose to prominence among pious Catholics when it was rebuilt as a home for a relic of the Holy Cross, brought to the Abbey by Plantagenet Queen Isabella of Angoulême around the year 1233. The Gothic church of Holy Cross abbey is cruciform with a belfry, ribbed stone vaulted ceilings, and a mural painting depicting a hunting scene (likely completed in the 15th century). The abbey fell into grave disrepair in the 17th century following the Cromwellian war. It was restored in the 1960s and 70s and is presently in active use.
