Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Historical note about the site/monument

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built to commemorate the crucifixion and burial of Christ. The first structure on the site dates to the rule of Constantine and was erected around 336 CE. It underwent several cycles of destruction and rebuilding, including major reconstruction during the Crusades (12th century). The extant structure dates chiefly to the early 19th century. The shrine enclosing the tomb (called the Edicule) was recently given major restoration, during which time materials from the original Edicule were subjected to scientific study. The Rock of Calvary is also preserved in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in a reliquary near the elaborate Altar of the Crucifixion.
