Çatalhöyük is a Neolithic settlement dating to approximately 7400-6200 BC and currently registered as  UNESCO World Heritage site. Excavations starting in the mid-20^th century have revealed 18 levels of occupation that have allowed scholars insights into the social organization and cultural practices of this Neolithic town, as well as (in the Western tell) its Chalcolithic counterpart. The site is remarkable for several reasons, chief among them its large size and the good preservation state of its structures. This is particularly evident in the mural paintings still visible on the walls of several buildings (or removed and exhibited in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations). The murals are frequently figural, with many depictions of hunt scenes. In addition, numerous artifacts have been retrieved from the site, including seals, ceramic figurines, obsidian mirrors, and marble statuettes.
